The Savior Complex – it’s a very real thing!!
There are so many layers to this, but I will try to keep it as simple as possible. A savior complex, or white knight syndrome, describes this need to “save” people by fixing their problems. If you have a savior complex, you might: only feel good about yourself when helping someone, or believe helping others is your purpose and you expend so much energy trying to fix others that you end up burning out.
The other issue on hand is that you are saying to this person, you cannot help yourself. You want to take away their pain/situation/suffering, but all you are doing is taking away their lesson, and in turn, their growth.
Please, I am not saying don’t be there for others, I’m saying be discerning with who you are helping and why. And again, are you helping them by eg. Giving them money, or helping them find a job? Giving them food or giving them an opportunity to work in exchange for their food? Etc etc.
A major problem with the savior complex is it right in alignment with the hero complex who will hold this over your head and let you know at every turn how they saved you. They will tell the world how they are the hero and won’t ever let you forget it.
I am so glad I worked this kink out in my Armour so many years ago because I get to watch people grow as they step into their power, their OWN power, not mine. Raising people up, instead of keeping them down… Guide people on how to stand up and be their own savior and their own hero… This is true love.
