Without drugs and alcohol, what’s the best way to escape from reality?

Someone posted this question today, and it really made me pause. I have had so many conversations lately with people who have chosen to step away from alcohol, weed, and other substances, and instead commit to a healthier lifestyle. If that is you, well done. Truly. Choosing yourself is not always easy, but it is one of the most powerful decisions you can make.

Here is my response.

Honestly, the healthiest way to escape reality is not to escape it, but to soften into it. Nature, breathwork, movement, music, prayer, journaling, and good sleep can shift your state without disconnecting you from yourself. Presence becomes the medicine when you stop trying to outrun what you feel.

And often, the need to escape is a sign that something inside is asking to be seen, held, and healed. When life feels too heavy, it usually means the nervous system is overloaded, the heart is carrying too much, or there is unprocessed pain looking for a way out. You do not need to numb it. You need support, compassion, and a gentle return to yourself.

If you are feeling this way, please feel free to reach out to us at Our Heart Centre. You do not have to walk it alone. We are here to hold you.
