When I look at addiction, I do not see substances.
I see pain looking for relief.
I see nervous systems that never learned safety.
I see hearts that learned early how to survive instead of how to rest.
What the world calls drugs, I recognise as coping.
What society labels weakness, I recognise as fear and unprocessed trauma.
Behind every bottle is a longing to belong.
Behind every pill is a body asking for the pain to stop.
Behind every needle is a story that was never heard.
Addiction is not selfishness.
It is disconnection.
It is what happens when love, safety, and regulation were missing long before the substance arrived.
People do not choose addiction.
They choose relief.
And when someone cannot stop, it is not because they will not.
It is because no one has shown them another way to feel whole yet.
I do not see lost causes.
I see souls waiting to remember themselves.
Where others see endings,
I see initiation.
Where others see failure, I see potential that has not been met with compassion.
When I look at them, I do not see “other.”
I see us.
Healing does not begin with judgement.
It begins with presence.
And miracles happen when we stay long enough to witness them.
We do recover.
Because love, when it is real, always finds a way home.
