Don’t tell me what to do‼
Nobody likes being told what to do. Absolutely nobody.
We humans have a rebellious streak built right into us. Even when we know something isn’t good for us, if someone tells us not to do it, we suddenly feel an urge to do exactly that thing.
Don’t smoke, we will want to smoke.
Don’t drink alcohol, we will want to drink.
Don’t eat that, don’t go there, don’t say that, and what do we do?
We go right ahead and do it anyway.
It is our curiosity. Our need to understand, to explore, to experience.
Imagine a big red button in front of you.
And someone says, “Don’t touch that red button.”
What is the first thing your mind wants to do?
Push it. 😄
It is in our nature. We want to know what happens when we do. We want to understand why the button is there in the first place.
But here is the interesting part.
If someone takes the time to explain why that red button shouldn’t be pushed, if they share from the heart that it is sacred to them, or that pressing it could cause harm, suddenly everything changes.
We don’t just avoid pushing the button out of obedience, we avoid it out of understanding. We even start protecting it ourselves. We tell others, “Hey, don’t touch that red button, it’s sacred for this reason.”
See the difference?
When people are told what to do, they resist.
When they are guided and understood, they align.
So next time you want someone to do or not do something, remember, don’t demand it, explain it.
Don’t control, communicate.
When we take the time to share the why, we open the heart instead of building walls.
Communication from the heart changes everything. 💚
